PALM SPRINGS FILM FESTIVAL
The event renews its emphasis on world cinema and new talent, with an eye toward raising its industry profile.

In launching the 15th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival last year, the newly appointed team of executive director Darryl Macdonald and programming director Carl Spence had all of two months to plan the event. But when the curtain rises Thursday on the 16th edition, they will have enjoyed a full year's preparation to put their stamp on the desert festival, including new elements and a stated mission to carve out a higher profile within the industry.
