MINORITY BUSINESSES, A NETWORK OF SUCCESS IS SPREADING
Immigrants pass the test in land of opportunity

Starting a business in the United States can prove difficult for immigrants, considering many come with little capital and limited English skills.

Some, however, manage to find niches in the American economy, opening their own shops -- often with the help of relatives who have already settled in large and small communities throughout California.

Cambodians have latched on to the doughnut industry, Indians know the motel business and Vietnamese have mastered the art of nails. Hispanic residents are finding success with grocery stores, restaurants and other enterprises.

The trend is apparent in San Luis Obispo County, where more than 15 percent of the population is foreign born.
