`BOLLYWOOD' SET TO ENTER LIMELIGHT IN KOREA
By Yoo Dong-ho

The buzz in world cinema in the past few years has focused on the potential of ``Bollywood,’’ India’s film industry, to make a splash by crossing over into major international pop culture markets.

Bollywood, one of the largest film industries in the world, covers film production and distribution in India, and Bombay (now Mumbai), nestled in the far western corner of the subcontinent, is the urban trendsetter of its billion people.

Despite India’s strong efforts to bring its prolific film industry to world theaters, however, Bollywood films have never been a major cultural force here with South Korea’s own box-office hits holding sway over the local film market.

But that doesn’t mean that Bollywood culture hasn’t made its mark all over South Korea.

Scratch a little deeper and one can find the Bollywood aesthetic popping up among hundreds of South Korean 20- and 30-somethings at a small theatre in Taehangno, often called the mecca of Korea’s drama industry and cultural activities.
