HIP HOP ARTISTS TAKE A PIECE OF ADVERTISING PIE

Andre Harrell, the record producer who gave P. Diddy his first internship in the business in 1990 and who later ran Motown Records, knows there can be many careers in a life.

These days Harrell, whose music career has had its share of high and low notes, is spinning his experience and connections into advertising campaigns for clients like Tommy Jeans, Footaction USA and the Apollo Theater Foundation.

Harrell, cofounder of the advertising agency and talent company Nu America, is one of many former and current hip-hop producers and performers who has turned his attention away from the Top 40 and toward Madison Avenue. While hip-hop performers have been running marketing divisions as part of their business, Harrell and others are building successful, full-service agencies with a roster of clients that they run apart from their other businesses.
