BETTING ON PRINT--IN SPANISH
By Ainsley O’Connell, forbes.com
This may not seem like the most auspicious time to roll out a Spanish-language newspaper, given the circulation scandal embroiling Tribune's Hoy. But today a San Antonio startup headed by veteran journalist Edward Schumacher challenged the big media conglomerates by launching Rumbo, the first in what Schumacher hopes will soon be a string of dailies designed to fill a gap in the Spanish-language market.
When Schumacher looks at the growing Hispanic population in the U.S., he sees in the numbers a story of opportunity. More than 6 million Hispanic households. Four-fifths of that population concentrated in nine states. And a Spanish-language newspaper industry dominated by free, small-scale weeklies of the mom-and-pop variety.
In short, he sees exactly what several media conglomerates have seen and then taken advantage of with Spanish-language dailies, from Tribune's (nyse: TRB - news - people ) Hoy to Knight Ridder's (nyse: KRI - news - people ) Diario La Estrella.
