FOR GEN-Y TRENDSETTERS
By Chris Betros

Considering how trendy Japanese youth are, it was only natural that Boston-based online boutique Karmaloop.com (www.karmaloop.com) would attract a growing fan base in the market here.

Established in 1999 by CEO Greg Selkoe, Karmaloop has become a wildly popular e-commerce site for Generation-Y trendsetters. It sells gear for men and women from 45 different street wear brands, including Kitchen Orange, Emily the Strange, Tank Theory and Freshjive. Hot products on their site include the golden poppy Puma sneakers and Puma pink cuff watch.

Karmaloop's sales grew 96% year over year in 2003 and are projected to more than double in 2004. The company's phenomenal success has earned it accolades from Time magazine which recommended it as a cool site for the fashionista in the 2003 Web Shopping Guide, and the company was also included in The Purple Book, the definitive guide to e-commerce. The website gets about 500,000 visitors a month, says Selkoe.
