ENCYCLOPEDIA DETAILS HISPANIC INFLUENCE ON U.S. CULTURE
Two Arizona State University professors have compiled what they call an encyclopedia of the impact and influence of Hispanic personalities on U.S. popular culture.
The two-volume work titled "Encyclopedia of Latino Popular Culture" is the fruit of three years of work by professors Cordelia Candelaria and Peter Garcia. It gives a detailed account of the contributions Hispanics have made to the United States in literature, music, art, religion, geography, sports and politics, among other fields.
Candelaria and Garcia co-edited the encyclopedia with the help of 75 contributing writers from all over the country, focusing on the impact of three Latino groups: Mexicans, Cubans and Puerto Ricans.
A smaller segment is dedicated to celebrities of other nationalities, including Colombian singer Shakira, who became Pepsi's Latina icon in the United States through an ad-campaign targeting the beverage company's Hispanic market.
